Multiple people victims of pit bull attack

OHIO — A pit bull attack in Franklin on Saturday has resulted in the animal being euthanized, according to Warren County Dog Warden Nathan Harper.

A 7-year-old brindle, pit bull mix broke free from its chain in the backyard of 109 Van Horn St. and attacked two juveniles, ages 6 and 8, and two adults.

The owner of the pit bull, Bryan Hipsher, who was one of the victims, said he immediately called the warden and had the dog taken away.

The other adult victim was Cierra Redick, 23 of Dayton. The victims were all people known to Hipsher.

“He had never shown any signs of aggression before,” Hipsher said. “But once it happened I did what I thought needed to be done. I called the warden and he said the animal would be quarantined for 10 days, but I told him to keep him. I have six grand kids and I wouldn’t be able to trust him again.”

The pit bull, named Cobain, weighed about 65 pounds and was on a 15-foot chain in the backyard, Hipsher said. It was the first pit bull he had ever owned.

“None of the bites were severe,” Harper said. “The dog was released to us by the owner on Saturday and euthanized on Monday.”

Harper also said he never had any prior dealings with that specific animal.

“It was a pretty scary few minutes, especially when he wouldn’t respond to my commands,” Hipsher said. “He’s always been a good dog and I did everything I could to keep him from being a mean dog.

“It’s all in how you raise them,” he continued. “I just don’t understand right now what happened, but I’m planning to stay in contact with the warden to see if they find anything.”

Pit bulls are classified as “vicious dogs” under the Ohio Revised Code.

The incident was not investigated by police.
