Pit bulls attack man, badly injure his Chihuahua

FLORIDA -- A small dog out on a walk with its owner this morning was attacked by two pit bulls that also bit the man when he tried to save his dog, a city spokeswoman said.

Angel Cruz was bitten in the hand, said Wendi Jackson, city spokeswoman.

"He bit the man when he tried to get him off his dog," Jackson said. "We are told that the male was the aggressive one and that it's the only aggressive animal."

The dogs are being taken to Halifax Humane Society where they will be quarantined for 10 days to determine if they have rabies. If the Chihuahua dies, then the dog will be deemed dangerous, Jackson said.

[Apparently if his poor dog survives with thousands of dollars in vet bills, the dog won't be declared dangerous and can be given right back to the owner. Nice.]

Animal control officers are trying to find the owner of the dogs, Jackson said.

"The dogs had tags, but animal control officers believe they are not valid," Jackson said. "The phone numbers on the tags are not working."
