CONNECTICUT — The city’s animal control officer is investigating an incident where a woman was repeatedly bitten by a dog that escaped its home, police said.
A 47-year-old woman was walking on Alexander Road around 5:45 p.m. Sunday when she noticed a woman was trying to capture her dog as it was fleeing, Detective Harold Gannon said.
The dog, a male shepherd mix, then bit the walker and circled her while continuing to bite her as the victim tried to fend off the attack and the owner attempted to get the animal on a leash.
The victim was able to stop the attack by using a barrel lid as a shield, Gannon said. The owner of the dog said the animal escaped when she opened the door to let in a friend. The victim received numerous bites and was treated at a hospital.
The dog was quarantined as of Thursday at the dog pound on Christian Lane with Animal Control Officer James Russo conducting an investigation into the incident. The dog appeared to have updated shots, Gannon said.
