NORTH CAROLINA -- A man and his dog were hospitalized after a pit bull attacked them last Wednesday morning at the Woodland Heights apartments on Lawndale Drive.
The victim was getting out of his vehicle with his terrier when a loose pit bull attacked the dog, which he was holding, according to Lieutenant S.C. Coates of the Reidsville Police Department.
Coates said the man tried to separate the dogs when the pit bull lacerated the man’s hand. The man’s wife heard the commotion and came out of her apartment trying to help and she was also bitten.
Out of self-defense, the man had to kill the pit bull.
The man was taken to Annie Penn Hospital for treatment. The wife was not taken to the hospital for her injuries. The terrier was also taken to Reidsville Veterinary Hospital to be checked and treated for its injuries.
The pit bull was a small tan dog wearing a red collar without a tag and no microchip.
The incident is under investigation but Coates believes charges will be filed against the dog’s owner.
The dog’s owner is unknown at this time and police are seeking information about ownership.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Reidsville Police Department at 349-1011 or Crime stoppers at 349-9683.
