FLORIDA -- A pit bull has been shot dead by police officers after it attacked a police dog while searching for a robber.
According to Lauderhill Police, officers were in the area of Northwest 45th Court, investigating a robbery, Tuesday afternoon. They stopped a man walking his pit bull and asked him to put the dog in the house so they could question him.
After putting the dog away, during the interview, the dog escaped and rushed towards police. Police said it actually managed to bite a Broward Sheriff's Office police dog on the neck, but it was not injured thanks to its protective collar.
"This pit bull was aggressive," said Lauderhill Police Captain Rick Rocco. "It attacked a police K-9 dog."
The pit bull then lunged at an officer before two Lauderhill officers fired their guns and killed it.
"It appears that the force that they used was reasonable in this case," Rocco said. "There's some that might say, could you have used anything less, like a Taser. Taser's not guaranteed, even a firearm's not guaranteed. An officer reacts quickly, makes that decision very rapidly. In this case, unfortunately, the pit bull was terminated."
The dog's owner, however,
"If he did go after the dog, he must have been playing with the dog," she said.
Neither of the officers who drew their guns were injured.
