Plumsted woman hospitalized after pit bull attack

NEW JERSEY -- A local woman who was attacked by a pit bull had to undergo emergency surgery for multiple dog bite wounds to her body, authorities said Tuesday.

The woman, who wasn’t identified, was flown to a trauma center by helicopter after she was attacked by a pit bull on Mill Stream Road after 8 p.m. Friday, authorities said.

Emergency medical technicians found the woman on the ground and bleeding, according to Dave Rogers Jr., chief of New Egypt EMS. The woman was in her 30’s, Rogers said.

“My first arriving officer reported that he saw two men laying on two dogs on the ground,’’ Rogers said.

Both dogs were pit bulls, he said.

Eight members of New Egypt EMS responded and treated the woman as well as the two men who were holding the dogs, he said. The men received non-life threatening bites and were treated by EMS at the scene, Rogers said.

The woman was taken by ambulance to a landing zone at the New Egypt Speedway and flown to Capital Health Systems Hospital in Trenton where for surgery to repair her wounds, he said.

The woman suffered “numerous bites and injuries about the head, arms and body,’’ Rogers said.

“She was conscious the whole time, but she was bitten up pretty good,’’ he said.

The woman was listed in stable condition following her surgery, he said.

Rogers said there were some tense moments for responding EMS crews. With the dogs restrained just a short distance away, technicians concentrated on treating the woman’s injuries so she could be moved, he said.

Multiple ambulances arrived at the scene along with police and animal control, Rogers said.

Details about how the attack happened were not available from police when they were contacted Tuesday night.

It was unknown what happened to the pit bulls.
