Sheriff's deputies shoot pit bull

CALIFORNIA -- Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a loose pit bull that charged to attack them on a golf course Tuesday evening as they searched for a man who had been harassing patrons at a nearby gas station, a deputy said.

The dog belonged to the man they were looking for, who was later detained on suspicion of resisting arrest, said Lt. Scott Haggard.

Around 6:45 p.m. deputies were responding to a call that the man had been "chasing people around" at the gas station on Gateway Road, Haggard said.

As deputies and a sheriff's department dog searched the nearby Bethel Island Golf Course for the man, the unchained pit bull charged them, Haggard said. Deputies shot it.

No one was bitten, Haggard said.
