Victim in deadly pit bull attack seeks tougher punishment for owners

WASHINGTON -- The woman whose little Yorkie dog was killed by a pit bull will address the Spokane City Council Monday. She is asking for tougher punishment for owners of aggressive dogs involved in attacks.

Laurinda Snow lost her dog last week in Northwest Spokane. She was out for a walk when a pit bull came charging out of an alley and attacked her Yorkie. Snow fought back, even biting the pit bull, but her dog died in the attack.

Snow says when she approached officers with Spokanimal she learned dog owners regularly get fined for their pets running loose, barking or not being properly licensed and vaccinated.  But Snow says she was told not many people actually pay those fines.

Spokanimal Director Gail Mackie tells KREM 2 News she asked the city to look up data on the number of unpaid citations a couple of years ago.  She learned only about ten-percent get paid.

Snow is going before the City Council in hopes of changing that.  She also wants dog complaints tracked, so officers know if a dog has a violent history.
