TENNESSEE -- A Jackson police officer fired one deadly shot at a pit-bull after the dog bit him in the left arm late this afternoon.
Sgt. Burkley Sain said police found the dog running lose on Susan Cove. He said the officer, Mark Ellington, suffered minor scratches, but the dog died as a result of the shot.
Police have identified the dog's owner but had not contacted the owner as of 3:40pm.
Sain said loose dogs have not been a problem throughout the city mainly due to an effective animal control team and dog owners.
"Owners have done a better job at containing their dogs," Sain said. "But every once in a while we'll have a dog break loose from its pin [sic]."
