Local Woman Whose Dog Mauled Grandson To Death Sentenced

TEXAS --A Killeen woman who pleaded guilty in November to criminally negligent homicide in the 2007 dog mauling death of her grandson was sentenced to five year’s deferred adjudication probation Thursday.

Brenda Ellen Parker

That means Brenda Ellen Parker, 51, will not have a criminal record if she successfully completes the probation.

Parker was charged after her pit bull mauled her 11-year-old grandson Seth Lovitt on Nov. 6, 2007.

Seth Lovitt's mother, Misty L. Lovitt, was charged manslaughter in the boy's death, but that charge was dropped after she pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault in exchange for providing testimony against Parker.

Misty Lovitt was given a one-year probated sentence.

An affidavit said the boy was attacked while he and his brother were playing at Parker's house and the dog lunged at the boy, biting him on the neck.

A grand jury indicted Misty Lovitt and Parker after prosecutor's presented evidence that both women knew the dog was vicious (A neighbor was bitten by the dog Oct. 31 of that year but did not report it to authorities until after Seth was killed, according to a Herald report.)

Earlier:
(2007) Killeen police say an eleven-year-old boy has died after being bitten on the neck by his family's pit bull.
Authorities say the dog jumped from the couch -- and went for Seth Lovitt -- when the boy was running through his home with his little brother last night. The dog knocked Seth to the ground and bit him.
The victim's grandmother and mother restrained the dog and called 911. Seth was pronounced dead about two hours later at Darnall Army Medical Center.
