Mailman attacked by two dogs

OHIO -- Police in Lorain County said a mailman was attacked by two dogs while he was delivering mail.

The incident happened Monday morning in the 1800 block of East 31st Street in Lorain.

Lt. Mark Carpentiere with the Lorain Police Department said the mailman, Mark Alberti, 34, of Lorain, was taken to Mercy Hospital for treatment. He is listed in stable condition.

A spokesman for the post office, David Van Allen, said that Alberti was bitten in the thigh area and on the hand. The mail carrier used his bag as a shield, but the dogs ripped it.  The dogs were also hit with pepper spray, but it didn't stop them, he said.

Carpentiere said the the dog warden was called to the scene.

The owners of the dogs told NewsChannel5 that police notified them that their dogs were involved in the attack. One dog is a female pit bull and the other is a male rottweiler mix [identified on video as a "rottweiler lab mix"]. Each dog is owned by a different person.

Both owners said they were cited for having their dog run at large.

A neighbor, who did not want to be identified, said the dogs knocked Alberti into some bushes and started biting his arms and legs. She then called police.

According to Van Allen, Alberti is a good employee who has been a mail carrier for 10 years.

Police are still investigating the incident.
