Man, dog recovering after pit bull attack in south St. Pete

FLORIDA -- A man claims he was attacked by several dogs, and Pinellas County Animal Control is on the case.

Ed Veprovsky was walking his dog Friday morning when the chaos ensued. He was with his dog, Dante, on 44th Street South when he noticed a few dogs lurking behind a car.

He says he tried to turn and go the other direction without them noticing, but the dogs immediately attacked.

Veprovsky says they got ahold of him first and tore up his leg pretty bad they tore up his leg pretty bad.

He says the three dogs then attacked Dante.

He says he tried to beat the dogs of, but he couldn’t, so eventually, he let Dante’s leash go so he could get away.

Bloody prints at the victim's house. The pit bulls
chased his dog, who'd run home for safety.

The dogs chased Dante down the street all the way back to Veprovsky’s house, where they pinned him up against the wall and continued to attack him.

Eventually, Veprovsky beat the dogs off with an ax handle. He went to the hospital.

"Yeah, it's probably pretty much one of the worst things you can go through in your life, watching your best friend helplessly being attacked there," Veprovsky said.

Dante was in pretty bad shape but will live. He is back from the vet's office.

The owner, Chauncey Gregory, told Bay News 9 he has four pit bulls and all of them were taken by animal control.

Gregory cooperated with the Animal Control officer and said he was upset to hear his dogs were accused in the attack. But he said he has certified papers on each of the dogs and that they've never attacked anyone.

[Mmm, they've never attacked anyone before because it only took this one time for animal control to take them from him. How many people say this? "Ohhh, they never did anything like this before!"]

The pit bulls aren't "backyard pit bulls," Gregory said.

Veprovsky said the dogs have been problems in the neighborhood before. But he said he's focused on helping Dante recover.
