New Mexico: Albuquerque man describes deadly pit bull attack

RIP Sampson

NEW MEXICO -- Two Albuquerque pit bulls escaped from their yard and mauled a small puppy to death in Northeast Albuquerque.

A small, two-year-old Shih-Tzu named Sampson was attacked by two pit bulls that dug into the backyard of a home near McKinney and Harper NE.

Monday morning started off like so many others. Greg Redwine woke up and let Sampson out to his completely fenced-in backyard. But soon, Redwine began hearing a lot of noise coming from his yard.

"That's when I saw the brown and blue pit bull just shaking Sampson. I yelled and nothing happened. Pretty much at that time, I knew Sampson was probably dead," Redwine explained.

The two pit bulls dug under the aging fence and made their way into the yard. Photos show the lifeless Shih-Tzu in one of the pit bull's mouth.

I hate to blame the victim here, but look at this crappy
fence. Would you ever leave your dogs outside in this
yard, knowing pit bulls were right next door??!

Redwine said he immediately confronted his neighbor who owns the pit bulls.

"He admitted to the officer that the brown dog 'doesn't like' other little animals," Redwine said.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 confronted the neighbor, but he refused to answer any questions.

The City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare Department plans to charge the pit bulls' owner with two counts of animals at large, two counts of violating the leash laws and deeming the dogs as dangerous under Angel's Law.
