Oregon man pleads no contest to starving his horse

"51-year-old man pleads no contest to animal neglect after officers find underfed horse at Gresham home"

OREGON -- A Gresham man pleaded no contest Monday to second-degree animal neglect after officials found his horse nearly starved to death in April.

Oregon Humane Society officers cited 51-year-old Teofilo Jimenez-Rodriguez in April after they found the mare, a seven-year-old named Mabel, " emaciated and near death," said David Lytle, an OHS spokesman.

Jimenez-Rodriguez voluntarily surrendered the horse, who gained weight and was permanently adopted in July. She now lives with a family near the Oregon coast.

In an agreement finalized in Multnomah County Circuit Court Monday, Jimenez-Rodriguez will also serve one year probation, pay a $367 fine and $317 in restitution to the Oregon Humane Society, Lytle said.

He also can't have any livestock expect for the four horses he already owns and must consent to welfare checks on those animals.
