Woman helpless in saving dog from pit bull attack

NEVADA -- A devastated pet owner says she was left helpless after a pit bull snatched her 15 pound dog.

Marlene Huderski was taking the trash out in a gated community, near Decatur and Rancho, when she turned her back for a moment.

When she turned back around, her Jack Russell Terrier was in the jaws of a pit bull. The terrier was on a leash although the pit bull was not.

She tried hitting the dog over the head with a retractable dog leash. According to Huderski, it took a neighbor putting the pit bull in a headlock to set her dog free.

The shattering reality soon set it that her dog wasn't going to make it.

"To hear the little dog yelping and crying, like help me help me, and you can't help," cried Marlene Huderski. "The fact is that I couldn't help him at the time."

Huderski's finger was bit in the attack but her main concern was getting her dog, Wilbur, to the vet.

Wilbur suffered fractured ribs, a punctured lung, damage to the spine and head trauma.

She believes her pet's injuries are telling of how vicious this pit bull was.

"The pit bull had him in his mouth, growling and shaking him like he was a rag doll," said Huderski.

RIP Wilbur

Las Vegas Animal Control initially responded to the condo where the pit bull came after the mauling on New Year's Eve. At the time, nobody opened up.

Action News went back to the home on Friday get a status report. A woman at the home claimed that she surrendered the pit bull to officers earlier Friday morning.

"It was my ex-boyfriend's dog. He's in jail now. He was in jail before the dog attacked. The dog got out while he was outside to use the bathroom," said the woman, who didn't want her name published.

The woman responsible for the pit bull said the patio gate must have been cracked open. She believes the dog pushed it open further to get out.

She admitted to hiding the dog for days following the attack.

What a lying piece of trash looks like

"It was a good dog, just wrong place wrong time," she said.

Huderski isn't so convinced of that. She says she's been nervous for all of the kids that play outside in the neighborhood.

"My God, what if it was a child? We have children in this complex. What if it was a young child?," asked Huderski.

Huderski says she'll be armed with mace from now on.

She plans to cremate Wilbur, the dog she rescued from a shelter just three weeks ago. She says she and her husband took the Jack Russell in following the death of their long-time dog.

Even though she's emotionally shaken, Huderski says she has plan to get another dog sometime soon.

The woman who finally surrendered the pit bull claims she's been told that the dog is set to be euthanized. She says she's been told the dog will first be quarantined for 30 days.
