One mid-Michigan woman's normal routine and quick thinking saved her neighbor's husky. What started out as a normal day ended up being one that made Sharmane Marsh a canine hero.
Marsh says she rushed back inside her home and called 911. Her teenaged son had several friends over at the time and they all stepped in to lend a hand.
"The boys immediately jumped up and rushed to help as well. We went across the street... was trying to see what we could do. Obviously there was nothing we could do. The dog was in the middle of the pond," said Marsh.
She says the dog, Nikki, wasn't moving much and had his head resting on the side of the ice. But ten minutes later, crews were on the scene and just four minutes after that Nikki was rescued.
Nikki's owner Jeff Bets is forever grateful.
"Well he's a good dog. Mostly my daughter's dog. She's 17 and she lost her mom 18 months ago, so the dog's pretty important to her," said Jeffery Betz, dog owner.
"I think that I did exactly what anybody else would do in that situation. I just saw an animal that needed help, and I was happy to help," said Marsh.
The dog's owner says Nikki is sore and tired and taking pain medication from the vet. But overall, he's doing well.
