INDIANA -- One dog is dead and another likely needs to be put down after a police officer intervened in a dog attack.
An Indianapolis Metropolitan Police officer was sent to the 11100 block of Autumn Creek Court around 5:17 p.m. Thursday when someone reported four pit bulls were hurting another dog.
When the officer arrived, the four pit bulls were attacking the other dog near a pond, according to an IMPD report. The pit bulls then began dragging the other dog into the pond.
After firing at a dog with his pistol and missing, the officer emptied an entire can of pepper spray on the dogs, causing one of them to run off, the report said. The officer then turned to his stun gun, firing it at another pit bull and causing it to run off. With two pit bulls remaining, the officer touched the stun gun to another pit pull and shot another with a gun.
The last pit bull stunned charged the officer, according to the report, prompting him to fire a shot at it.
All four pit bulls ran into the same backyard, but the officer called in animal control to provide medical attention to the canines, the report said.
While the police officer and animal control officer entered the yard, two dogs charged them, prompting the police officer to fire nine gunshots at the dogs. One pit bull struck several times by bullets died, and three other rounds skipped off concrete before striking the house.
24-Hour News 8 spoke with the pit bulls' owner, who said he's angry officers entered his yard and shot his dog Bluejack. He said Bluejack was a champion who had won ribbons.
"They took it upon themselves, and literally murdered my dog ... ," he said. "One of the last officers on the scene decides to re-enter my yard, then the daddy to the puppies charged him, and he shot him five times."
[Do you hear any concern for the dog that was attacked and mauled to death by his dogs? Nope.]
He said he had five pit bulls in his yard: a mom, dad and three puppies. He said the three puppies and the mom were involved in the initial attack against the wandering dog.
The owner received 12 citations from animal control: five for the animal attack. He said he has hired an attorney.
The owner of the dog being attacked by the pit bulls said his dog’s injuries were bad enough that he’ll have to put him down. That owner received a citation for having a wandering animal.
