Neighbors react to Pit Bull attack

SOUTH CAROLINA -- Neighbors are on edge after three pit bulls attacked another dog at a home along Highway 15 in Myrtle Beach. Now as a result of the attack, some are keeping their animals inside at night, and they are keeping a close eye on their kids when they are outside.

Many are trying to take proactive steps to make sure another attack does not happen. Eddie Thomas said, "I was asleep and got out of bed because I heard a racket. I come out and my dog was getting beat up by three other pit bulls."

Thomas said that was frightening enough, but what scared him even more was the dogs turning on him. Thomas added, "We tried to stop them, and they chased my friend into his truck and chased me back into the house."

Thomas did what he could to save his dog. Thomas said, "I grabbed an ax handle and go out to get the dogs off my dog and I didn't have to hit them I just swung and they run."

Now Animal Control Officers are searching for the dogs around 17th Avenue South. Thomas said his dog is recovering from her injuries. Thomas added, "Her head has a big scar, [a] big cut. Half her ear lobe is missing and a scar on her leg and up on her chest."

Some who live near where the attack happened said they are concerned for their own safety. Sharonda Swinton said, "With kids at play and people walking down the street you have to look left and right to make sure you are not about to be attacked by a dog. Don't get me wrong I love animals, but I think they need to be on a leash."

Thomas added, "That is a safety hazard if you've got dogs running around here like that especially with little kids I can imagine what they would do to a kid if they did that dog like that." Animal Control Officers are asking for the public's help in finding the three pit bulls.

Officers said once the dogs are found they will be quarantined for evaluation. They said there could be charges filed as a result. Swinton stated, "I say the dogs need to be caught before kids get hurt.
Something needs to be done about it."

If anyone spots the dogs, officers are asking for people to call the Myrtle Beach Police Department.
