Family's pet dog and bunny killed by neighbor's dog

AUSTRALIA -- Police have referred the fatal mauling of two pets to the RSPCA and City of Greater Bendigo.

Bendigo officers were called to investigate the death of a rabbit and dog at a White Hills home yesterday.

“The owner of the offending dog was a neighbour,” Bendigo Sergeant Mick McCrann said. “There was no history of the dog doing this before, it was not regarded as a dangerous dog.

“The owner was not home at the time of the incident and has assisted police with their inquiries and is extremely traumatised about the matter.

“Police are not taking any further steps and the matter will be referred to the RSPCA and the City of Greater Bendigo.”

Three-year-old rabbit Saige and nine-year-old dog Max were mauled to death after the dog entered the Meadows family property.

The family’s teenage children found their pets’ bodies early yesterday afternoon.

Father Rod Meadows said the children had heard a lot of barking just before midday.

“Max was a lovely dog, really friendly,” he said.

“We used to let the rabbit and dog out together and they would get along really well.”

Max and Saige were the family’s only pets.
