Infant hospitalized after dog attack in Henderson County, NC

NORTH CAROLINA -- A baby’s cries can be heard in the background of a 911 call reporting a dog attack on the infant Tuesday morning.

Deputies responded to a home in the Fox Ridge community of Henderson County at about 10 a.m. In the 911 call, a frantic woman pleads for help. Out of breath and frightened, she tells dispatchers the child is only 10 months old.

“Where are the injuries?” the dispatcher asked.

“All over ... please hurry ... I am about to have a heart attack,” the caller said.

The call abruptly ends after the woman said she wanted the dog, which she said was contained in a fence, picked up by Henderson County Animal Control.

Sheriff’s Office Capt. Jerry Rice said in a news release that the child, whose age and identification has not been disclosed, was taken to a medical facility to be treated for numerous bite wounds.

The dog’s owner, who has also not been identified, signed the animal over to deputies and the dog was euthanized Tuesday afternoon. Rice said the dog was described to authorities as a pit bull mix.

“At this time, there is no indication the animal was did not have its current vaccinations, but as precautionary measures the animal will be sent for testing,” Rice said in a news release.
