Kalispell Police officer shoots, kills dog after attack

MONTANA -- A Kalispell Police officer shot and killed a dog after an attack on Wednesday evening with authorities saying the dog charged at an officer who was trying to contain it.

KPD says they received a call reporting two "vicious" dogs had just attacked an adult male on First Avenue West in Kalispell and officers found the dogs at St. Matthews School, where they tried to contain the them.

KPD says one of the dogs charged at an officer while he was waiting for a catch pole to arrive. KPD Detective Senior Sgt. Scott Warnell says the officer was within protocol when he shot the dog, which died on scene.

"When the dog charges our officers in an aggressive manner and the officer feels that their safety or the safety of other people around is in jeopardy, then they have to take whatever action they feel is appropriate at the time."

We spoke with the dog's owner, who said he is very angry and upset with how this incident was handled.
