Mother pit bull, pup attacks Celina man

OHIO -- A Celina man is still recovering from surgery Monday after a mother pit bull and one of her pups attacked him when he went to check on another pup that was recently treated by a veterinarian.

According to the Celina Police Department, the attack began around 4:30 p.m. Friday in the basement of a home at 214 Elm Street where the mother and her four pups were living.

When officers arrived, Douglas Thomas, 55 was penned in the far corner of the basement by the dogs, with one actually hanging on his left leg keeping him from reaching the basement stairs and another biting him.

Officers drew their firearms as a precaution, but used pepper spray on the dogs instead in order to fend them off while emergency responders helped the man up the stairs.

Police found that as Thomas walked downstairs into the basement to check on a pup in a dog pen that was recently treated by a vet, its mother was chewing on the pen.

As Thomas walked toward the pen, the mother turned and attacked him and was joined by one of her pups.

Thomas suffered bite injuries to his lower left leg, right ring finger and left forearm.  The injuries included puncture wounds along with torn skin and tissue.  The injury to his left leg was so severe, bone was visible

He was taken to JTDMH in St. Marys, but later transferred to Lima Memorial Hospital for surgery.  Police could only provide that he is currently listed in stable condition.

Thomas was a resident of the home where the attack took place, but the dogs belonged to his stepson, Kevin D. Weaver, 30, who also lives there.

As required by law, the mother and three pit bull mixed pups will be held by the Mercer County Dog Warden for a quarantine period. The fourth pup, which was in the dog pen at the time of the attack, was left at the home.
