Officer shoots pit bull after it kills Boxer

CALIFORNIA -- A Yreka Police Department (YPD) officer shot a charging pit bull on Monday. The shooting occurred after the dog and two others entered a neighbor’s backyard and mauled and killed the resident’s dog, YPD Sgt. Mark Gilman reported.

YPD officers were dispatched to a home in the 300 block of Florentine Street at 3:25 p.m. when a resident reported that his dog was being attacked by three of his neighbor’s pit bulls, Gilman said. The neighbors share a fence, and the pit bulls managed to get through the fence.

The three pit bulls entered the victim’s backyard and killed his dog,” Gilman said.

He added that the deceased dog was a boxer.

When officers arrived, they attempted to verbally break up the fight. Gilman said that one pit bull charged an officer, and the officer shot and injured it.  The two other pit bulls retreated to their yard, Gilman said.

Two of the dogs are being quarantined and the dog that sustained a gunshot wound is receiving veterinary care.

According to Gilman, the Siskiyou County Animal Control Officer is investigating the matter, and whether the animals will be destroyed has yet to be determined.
