The incident happened at about 11 a.m. on Costigan Drive. Officials say the officer, Ashley Browning, was called to the area after a complaint that the dog was running free in the neighborhood.
She apparently showed up and was quickly confronted by the dog, which lunged at her and bit her in both the arm and groin areas.
Browning was taken to UK with serious injuries, but they are not believed to be life-threatening. The owner of the dog surrendered it to authorities, and the owner was cited for harboring a vicious dog.
Neighbors said complaints about the dog had been filed previously, and some said they would not let their children outside to play because the dog was frequently allowed to roam the neighborhood.
The dog is now in the custody of Fayette County Animal Control.
