Debra Lee says she was walking her 90-pound Akita-chow mix, Jazz, when she was approached by Adrian Happel Jr. and his sister. The two children asked to pet the dog.
With no history of violence, Lee says she immediately said yes. Lee said the dog jumped on the girl, who ran back. The boy then ran to Jazz, who attacked him. Lee said she used a stick to get the dog to release its bite.
“It was a shock because he’s never bitten anybody. This is first time ever,” said Lee.
Lee tells us she and her family raised Jazz from a puppy. She said he had never shown any signs of aggression prior to Thursday.
“My grandkids used to ride Jazz like he was a horse. They put their hands in his mouth. They fed him. They slapped him in the face, pulled his tail. He’s never, ever bit anybody. Yesterday, I saw a different Jazz. He wasn’t the same dog,” said Lee.
Lee surrendered Jazz to animal control immediately after the attack, where he is now being quarantined. She said she is sorry for what happened..
“I think I did the right thing. I didn’t do anything wrong,” said Lee.
DeKalb County police say the case is still under investigation.
The Happle family says they're too emotional to talk.
