DCP officer shoots pit bull in self-defense

GEORGIA -- A Dougherty county police officer shot and killed a pit bull.

A man who lives on Nelms Road called police after he spotted the vicious stray near his house.

When Corporal Ted Wertz showed up, the pit bull charged him and Wertz shot him.

Captain Tom Jackson says if you feel an animal is threatening your life, you can defend yourself.

"You run a fine line of what is defense to yourself and your property and what is considered animal cruelty, so an animal that is not a threat to you and you kill it you can be charged with cruelty, but if you can show that the threat was reasonable you can take appropriate actions," said Capt. Tom Jackson, Dougherty County Police.

Officers say if possible, make sure you call animal control or police officers before you take the law into your own hands.
