NORTH CAROLINA -- "Ellie" the therapy pup is getting better, but Cornelius Police are still looking for the owner of a pit bull that attacked her on Church Street last week.
Owner Brandon Thompson said Ellie, who is training to become a therapy dog, has puncture wounds on her chest and back. Thompson, of 20236 Church St., said a woman was walking her dog past his house around 1:30 p.m. Monday, March 26, when it got off the leash and ran towards his 1 1/2-year-old yellow lab. Thompson and Ellie were in their own yard.
Thompson said the pit bull locked his jaws on Ellie. "I punched the pit bull in the head 30 times," he said, even as the owner of the pit bull also tried to remove the dog.
After the pit bull attacked, its owner “begged me not to call it in,” Thompson said. “She said, ‘please don’t call this in.'"
Thompson, who called the police, said the owner and her dog promptly left the scene. She may have hid in woods nearby because police were unable to find her.
In the police report, the pit bull owner is described as a 25- to 30-year-old white woman dressed in blue sweat pants and a black/flowered top. The female pit bull is dark brown with a white patch on its chest.
Thompson said he has real concerns about the safety of children in the neighborhood as well as children from the Goddard School and the YMCA who come to nearby Legion Park. If you have information on the pit bull or its owner, please call the Cornelius Police Department at 704-893-1363 or the Cornelius Control at 704-237-3602.
