9-year-old girl needs 30 stitches after vicious dog attack

CANADA -- Bylaw officials say they'll be seeking the maximum penalty against the owner of a dog that lunged at a little girl on Monday.

The Staffordshire terrier was on a leash with his owner when, without warning, he bit a nine-year-old girl’s leg.

Bonita Carillo had to get 30 stitches to close a very deep wound.

The dog bit her leg so tightly she had to kick it several times to get it to loosen its grip.

Bonita says she was riding her bike in her Dover neighbourhood when the animal went after her, sinking its teeth into her leg, right to the bone.

The young girl was rushed to hospital, and is sore but recovering.

Bylaw Services says the dog is now in quarantine, and they're trying to get the owner to cooperate and find out if the dog has had all its shots.

Officials plan on seeking the maximum penalty against the owner, and will follow through on a dangerous dog hearing.

Bonita says she doesn't want the dog put down if it can be properly trained, but does admit she's a little leery of dogs now.

Neighbours say they lodged separate complaints with bylaw about this dog only three and a half weeks ago, concerned about its level of aggression.

The history of this animal will be part of the overall investigation.
