Boy, 5, seriously injured in dog attack, police say

PENNSYLVANIA -- A Whitehall Township boy was seriously injured in a dog attack Sunday at his neighbor's home in the 900 block of Catasauqua Road, police said.

The attack occurred at 1:23 p.m., shortly after the 5-year-old arrived to play with children who live in the dog owner's home, Lt. Ribello Bertoni said. The dog, a male Great Dane, bit the boy's neck and throat, he said.

The victim was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital in Salisbury Township, where he received dozens of stitches and other treatment for his injuries, the lieutenant said.

The owner, Becky Frey, was moving the dog to the basement from the backyard -- where the children planned to play -- when the attack occurred, Bertoni said.

No charges have been filed; township police turned over the investigation to a state dog warden, he said. A Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture spokeswoman today said she was aware of the incident, but could not immediately provide information about the case.
