VIRGINIA -- An infant is now in stable condition after being attacked by a dog while laying in his bassinet, police said.
"A family member reportedly found the dog biting the infant in his bassinet. An ambulance was dispatched to the residence at 5:22 p.m. and the victim was transported to Fauquier Hospital in Fauquier County," police said.
The boy was later taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church.
Detectives believe the infant boy, who is less than a month old, suffered from more than 30 dog bites inflicted by the family's Jack Russell terrier.
"My heart goes out to the family in this incident and I pray for a full recovery of the child," Sheriff Scott Jenkins said.
The owner of the dog shot the dog immediately after discovering the injured baby, police said.
No charges have been filed and none are expected at this time.
