May 3: National Specially-abled Pets Day

National Specially-abled Pets Day {formerly Disabled Pets Day} celebrates these amazing and heroic animals, helps to educate the public about caring for disabled pets and find homes for orphaned, specially-abled pets.

Founded in 2006 and internationally embraced, the decision was made to change the name when founder Colleen Paige felt that it just didn't fit. "The name held too negative a connotation... because these pets are very able! Pets that become challenged due to disease, birth flaws or injuries, tend to develop greater senses than your average pet. Most of the time it's as if they never had to readjust to life...and we need to keep up with them!"

Celebrated nationally and internationally on May 3rd annually, National Specially-abled Pets Day encourages adoption always and for people who would like to bring a new furry family member home, to consider a specially-abled pet.

Carli Davidson's 'Pets With Disabilities' Project:
Carli Davidson is an animal person, to say the least. An experienced trainer and photographer, the 31 year old devotes her life to caring for furry friends and capturing their beauty on film.

Much of her time is spent “rolling on the ground with whatever animal I’m working with, getting in their skin as much as possible, and encouraging them to open up to the camera.”

Davidson began her “Pets with Disabilities” series two years ago, after witnessing a wheelchair-bound German Shephard playing catch with its owner. The project tells the story of blind and partially paralyzed pets with their owners, and proves that all animals can thrive in a loving environment.

Starting Friday, Davidson will be selling her work online, donating 10% of proceeds to a monthly rotation of animal rescue centers which focus on special needs pets.
