Pit bull attacks dog, man injured

MASSACHUSETTS -- A dog attack Saturday afternoon resulted in two owners being bitten and one dog ending up at the pound.

Saturday afternoon Peter Spellman of Tewksbury was walking his dog, a Labrador retriever mix, dog on Main Street near Silver Lake when a pit bull broke her ties and attacked his dog.

The incident occurred in the vicinity of 41 Main Street. The pit bull, named Mercedes, is owned by Derek Powers of 43 Main Street and has a track record of being dog aggressive. Mercedes has had several past incidents of attacking other dogs, said Wilmington’s Animal Control Officer, Ellen Sawyer. Mercedes is just three years old and is spayed.

When the men attempted to break up the dogs, both were bitten by their own dogs. Spellman was bitten in the neck or throat and was transported to a Boston hospital by ambulance.

Both dogs were taken to the veterinarian following the attack. The pit bull has minor injuries, including a scratch on the nose and a potential bite. The Labrador was much more severely injured and ended up on pain pills and stitches following the incident, according to Sawyer.

Sawyer picked up the dog on Sunday and took her to Wilmington’s animal pound at Andover Animal Hospital for a ten-day quarantine. Sawyer stated that the pit bull had been quarantined before for injuries to another animal, just last month.

Following Saturday’s incident, the Animal Control Officers requested, and Powers agreed Monday, to have the dog humanely euthanized through Andover Animal Hospital. The dog will be euthanized following the ten-day mandatory quarantine.

Powers will be held responsible for all charges related to the housing of his dog at the pound.
