LOUISIANA -- Last Thursday Washington Councilwoman Mona Wilson obtained a letter signed by the town clerk authorizing her to pick up her families pit bulls as long as she didn't bring them back into the town limits.
"When I'd gone down to the town hall to pick up a letter or see how could i get my children's pits released this was the letter that was given to me. A letter that they were not to return to the town of Washington."
Who authorized the letter? According to the signature on the bottom, it was the town clerk.
"I thought it was a little unusual for the town clerk to have signed such a letter."
Police Chief Ronelle Broussard says the ordinance doesn't allow for owners to claim their dogs unless they've met the requirements.
"It seems like we're making rules as we go."
He's all for pit bull owners getting their dogs back, but wants the chain of command to be clear.
"I disagree with the town clerk having that much authority to sign the letter to release these dogs.
The chief says he and the council need to be on the same page. as for the ordinance, he'd like the council to reevaluate it yet again saying requirements are too harsh.
"We need to come up with a solution. We need to come up with something to help these dog owners."
