Cole, who is legally blind, owned the 9-year-old German Shepherd for seven years.
RIP Quincy |
"I'm not just heartbroken. I'm at a big loss," says Cole.
He says his dog was attacked on March 19th by two pit bulls that escaped from a home in his neighborhood. "She turned at an angle, and when she did, I felt the thud of the dogs hitting her. I could tell by the way she was twitching that there was an issue," says Cole.
When Animal Services officials arrived at the scene they concluded that there was no attack. A police report states that they found no wounds on Quincy, only some drool on her left shoulder ("There was a wet drool spot on her left shoulder, but no punctures could be seen").
From then on, Cole says Quincy never acted the same again. Dr. Lisa Paxon-Rollins at Beneva Road Animal Hospital says the dog did not appear to have an external injuries, but because of the stress Quincy developed from whatever the encounter was, she developed a severe internal infection. Last Friday, Quincy died.
"It's unfortunate when individuals don't take care of their dogs and then a service dog gets injured or attacked is uncalled for," says Cole.
He is already searching for a new guide dog, but the cost and the waiting period will prove to be challenges for him, he says.
The Sheriff's Office did cite the owner, Jameison Harney, of the two pit bulls (named Romeo and Peanut) that escaped for running loose and for not having them properly licensed. (Mr Harney blames his children for the dogs attacking the guide dog. The report says "He states that his dog did not attack and are friendly. Jameison says his children left the door open and that is how the dogs got out.")
According to authorities, there have never been any other complaints made about these animals to Animal Services.
[If these dogs are so friendly, why didn't the officers make the man bring his two pit bulls outside the house and let them get a look at this victim guide dog? I guarantee they would have gone crazy and these officers would've seen the true nature of these dogs.]

BTW, this upstanding citizen, Jameison Harney, was arrested 9-6-2011 for two charges of probation violation. What was he on probation for? Sale of controlled substance. Imagine that! - Source: Florida Mugshots
