8-Month-Old Baby Boy Fatally Mauled by Pit Bulls

CALIFORNIA -- An 8-month-old baby boy was mauled to death Thursday by at least one of three pit bull terriers, possibly belonging to the child's parents.

Deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department and paramedics from the Lemon Grove Fire Department responded to a call at 4:52pm that claimed a child was being attacked by one or more dogs, according to L.A. Times.

Officials arrived on the scene -- a Lemon Grove home -- within four minutes to find a woman holding a seriously injured baby boy.

The infant was taken to Rady's Children's Hospital and pronounced dead at 6:06 pm.

A neighbor told NBC San Diego the dogs have previously attacked neighboring cats. The woman added, "I don't think that a dog like a pit bull, rottweiler, large dogs should be around little infants."

All three dogs were removed from the home by animal control officers, and reports have not concluded whether or not the animals belong to the victim's family. Lt. Larry Nesbit of the Sheriff's Department described the animals as "aggressive."

Nesbit also noted that the baby boy is the youngest victim of a fatal dog attack that the department is aware of.

Sheriff's homicide detectives and the U.S. Border Patrol are investigating the case.
