NEW ZEALAND -- Community donations have saved Max the jack russell dog, who was mauled by two pit bull terriers.
Two-year-old Max's owner Kara Wasley has received more than $2000 in donations to pay for skin graft surgery as he recovers from the near fatal attack.
"After the article in the Daily News on Saturday people that I don't even know dropped off donations to the vet clinic and went on to Facebook where my sister had set up an account for Max and gave money," she said.
"I just want to send out a heartfelt thanks to everyone for helping to save Max's life."
The two pitbull terriers responsible for the attack in Opunake almost a fortnight ago were put down two days later.
Last week, Ms Wasley was told her pet needed thousands of dollars worth of surgery or he would have to be put down.
But after a second opinion, Max was put in vet hospital where he has been treated with antibiotics and cream for his wounds.
"The vets have done an amazing job caring for him and apart from the deep wound on his abdomen that still needs a skin flap or skin graft, every other bite has healed," she said.
Max has had almost daily visitors at vet hospital and is back to his happy and healthy self.
"His tail is wagging again and he's doing really well all round," Ms Wasley said.
A Taranaki radio station is also doing their bit by donating 25 per cent of the money raised at a barbecue on Saturday to Ms Wasley's vet bills.
"I can't believe how generous people have been and are continuing to be and I can't thank people enough," she said.
