CANADA -- The owner of a Chihuahua has been charged after the dog was left in a hot car Monday at Sherway Gardens.
A passerby called police after spotting the dog in an unattended Toyota SUV parked in front of the Sporting Life store at 12:25 p.m.
Rescue crews used a “slim jim” to pry open the car door and retrieve the frightened pup hiding under the front seat. The dog had been in the car for about an hour when crews arrived at 1:30 p.m.
Temperatures in the city are expected to hit 30 degrees Celsius (86 ° Fahrenheit) — and it will feel much hotter with the humidity.
The owner, a 70-year-old woman, told police she had left a water bottle for it to drink.
“There was no water in the car,” said Sgt. John Walker.
The dog was taken to a nearby pound and returned to the woman, who was charged under a city bylaw and fined $260.
It is alive and well.
A dog died Sunday after its owners left it in a parked car at Vaughan Mills shopping centre. A young couple from Sudbury has been charged under the Criminal Code with one count each of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.
