NEW YORK -- Authorities say a sheriff's deputy responding to a report of two pit bulls on the loose in a suburban Syracuse neighborhood had to fatally shoot one of the dogs after it bit him.
The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office tells local media outlets that Deputy Michael Poland was at a home in the town of Clay Wednesday afternoon after a resident reported two pit bulls had tried to attack her 4-year-old son.
Officials say Poland had to shoot one of the dogs when it bit him on the leg. The other dog ran away.
The sheriff's office is attempting to locate the dogs' owner.
