Officer shoots pit bull; Dog attacks Oberlin policeman during arrest altercation

OHIO -- An officer shot a pit bull that bit him while he was attempting to arrest an Oberlin man Sunday night, according to an Oberlin police report.

Lewis Wade, 20, was charged with assault on an officer, resisting arrest, obstructing official business and animals at large. He was taken to Lorain County Jail.

An officer noticed a large pit bull running through yards on South Park Street about 5:30 p.m. and his owner, identified as Wade, throwing a ball to the dog Sunday. The officer told Wade his dog could not be running loose and warned he would be cited. Wade yelled obscenities at the officer and continued allow his dog to run loose, the report said.

The officer continued to warn him and Wade said “I got something for you,” police said. Wade went to his house and let two more dogs out and a pit bull ran at the officer, according to the report. The officer began backing off and Wade yelled he should get off his property or the dogs are going to mess him up, police said. Wade continued to approach and the officer attempted to push him back and drew out his Taser. As he did this, the dogs attempted to bite the officer, the report stated.

The officer attempted to push the dogs away and one bit him on the right wrist. The officer pulled his hand away from the dog that bit him.

The two large pit bulls continued to approach the officer in an aggressive manner and he wrote in the report there was no other choice but to shoot the dogs in self defense.

The officer fired two rounds at the most aggressive dog and hit the dog at least once, police said.

The officer told Wade he was under arrest for assault, but Wade continued to threaten the officer, according to the report.

At that point, the officer warned Wade could have the Taser used on him. Wade’s mother came out at this time and yelled at the officer, the report stated.

The officer finally managed to arrest Wade, who continued to jerk away from the officer, but compiled as more officers arrived on scene.
