CALIFORNIA -- A Pleasant Hill woman went to the hospital with puncture wounds and possibly some broken bones on her right hand after a pit bull ran out of her home and attacked another dog, police said.
The canine confrontation happened about 6 p.m. in the 1900 block of Helen Drive, when another person was walking a Chihuahua mix along the street in front of the home, Sgt. Gary Brown said. The female pit bull apparently pushed open the screen to the front door and pounced, Brown said.
The woman, who told police the pit bull belongs to a family member who lives in Hayward, put her fingers in the larger dog's mouth trying to break up the attack, Brown said. She initially refused hospital treatment but later changed her mind.
The Chihuahua mix was taken to a vet with bites on the leg, Brown said.
The woman and a member of her family declined to comment. The woman initially surrendered all rights to the dog to the Animal Services Department of Contra Costa County, Brown said, but later changed her mind.
The pit bull will be quarantined for rabies and other diseases over the next 10 days before a final decision is made on what happens to the dog. A neighbor told police the pit bull previously showed itself to be aggressive.
