CANADA -- A dog that attacked a pregnant Alberta woman was shot and killed on Wednesday, one day after it escaped from quarantine in a kennel east of Edmonton.
The woman, who is eight months' pregnant, sustained bite marks on her arms and upper body in the attack at a home in Fort Saskatchewan on Monday afternoon. She has since been released from the hospital but continues to receive medical care. Police say her baby is fine.
The victim is in her 20s and lives with a group of people in the house. The dog, which police believe was a pit bull terrier, was owned by one of her roommates and was known to her, said RCMP Const. Wally Henry.
"The victim had been around this dog lots," he said. "She wasn't scared of this dog. It wasn't a concern for her."
The dog was removed from the house and then placed under quarantine at a kennel in a rural area of Strathcona County.
RCMP were alerted Tuesday morning that the dog had escaped.
Both RCMP and Strathcona County enforcement officers started to search for the dog because they were concerned it would attack again.
The dog was located around 1:30 a.m. MT Wednesday after a motorist called about an aggressive dog that was roaming the highway outside of Sherwood Park.
"The motorist was actually fearful to get out of their vehicle," Henry said.
Officers had to shoot and kill the dog because it tried attacking them.
Henry says tests are now underway to determine if an underlying condition caused the dog to become so aggressive.
