ILLINOIS -- Two Berwyn residents were charged with misdemeanors this week after police removed more than 60 cats and three dogs from their home.
Eric Jandt, 41, and Photini Rose Varkonyi, 50, were both charged Tuesday with one misdemeanor count of obstructing justice and one misdemeanor count of endangering the life of a child, according to Berwyn City Administrator Brian Pabst.
He said a 17-year-old girl who lived at the home, in the 3100 block of South East Avenue, was taken into custody by the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services.
On Monday, almost 40 cats and the three dogs were removed from the home after neighbors complained of a foul smell in the area, according to police officials. Animal control officials removed 20 more cats Tuesday after setting up traps in and outside the house.
The animals were taken to a community animal shelter in neighboring Cicero. Michael McKee, Cicero's animal welfare manager, said it might take several days to catch all the animals.
A neighbor who lives across the street from the home told the Tribune that Varkonyi loved animals and was a volunteer at various animal shelters. But Pabst and police officials would not confirm whether she volunteered at shelters.
Jandt and Varkonyi are scheduled to appear in court at the Maybrook Courthouse in Maywood on Aug. 15.
