Animal Abuse Case in So.Tier Among Worst Ever Seen

NEW YORK -- An animal abuse case in the Southern Tier has rescue workers calling it one of the worst cases they've ever seen.

Christine Macan

State Police have charged 61-year-old Christine Macan of Conklin with 16 cases of felony animal cruelty; Conklin is a town of about 5,000 people, 10 miles southeast of Binghamton, near the Pennsylvania border.

Police say Macan had 13 emaciated Dobermans in her home, along with three Dobermans -- in crates -- that had been dead for at least a year.

And much like the animal abuse case in Conquest last April, where numerous horses were kept in stalls that had not been cleaned for many months, investigators say most of Macan's dogs were kept in cages that had at least one inch of feces inside; they say the dogs were starving, covered with sores.

911 was called after a neighbor reported horrible smells -- of feces and of dead animals; investigators say the smells inside the home were overwhelming.

As for the dogs that were rescued, they are expected to have a long and difficult recovery, but those treating the animals said Saturday they are making steady improvements.
