FLORIDA -- Police have seized a pit bull whose Sunday attack along Jacksonville Beach left a smaller dog so seriously injured its veterinarian had to amputate its right front leg.
Stephen Gregory Heindel, 25, of 3rd Street South in Jacksonville Beach was tracked down to his home about 11 p.m. Wednesday and his 4-year-old female pit bull Juno taken into custody, according to the Jacksonville Beach Police Department.
No charges will be filed against Heindel. But the dog’s future depends on the outcome of a dangerous dog hearing set for the next 30 days, according to Sgt. Thomas Bingham, the Police Department spokesman.
“The dog will be held until we can present our case in front of a special magistrate, and he makes his decision,” Bingham said.
Jacksonville resident Lester Folsom’s daughter was walking their small dog, Woofi, along the beach about 5 p.m. Sunday when a black pit bull laying without a leash next to three men attacked, according to witness statements to police. One of the men grabbed the pit bull, and they all ran.
A witness followed the men to a home on 22nd Avenue South in Jacksonville Beach and called police, who went there and found no one.
Police received an anonymous tip Wednesday about the dog owner and tracked Heindel and his dog to the 3rd Street South house. Heindel said his pit bull was tied up, but pulled its anchor out of the sand and attacked, according to the police report.
Um, what reason did he give for running away with the pit bull and hiding it until police finally tracked him down? What? He didn't have anything to say about being a coward? Kind of reminds me of this fat, disgusting Joey Buttafuoco look-a-like: "When you tarnish one badge, you tarnish them all"
