NEW YORK -- A dog, attacked by a larger dog on South Main Street on Monday evening, had to be put down due to her injuries, the Niagara County Sheriff's Department reported.
According to the report, the owner of a white rat terrier named Jade was walking with some friends when a brown American Staffordshire terrier (aka pit bull) ran to the smaller dog from across the street.
The pit bull grabbed Jade in his mouth and would not let go. Four people began punching, kicking and hitting the dog until it finally let Jade loose.
The pit bull was secured and taken inside the owner's residence. Jade was breathing with wounds to his back and sides and taken to a veterinarian to seek medical treatment.
A 19-year-old man was dog-sitting the pit bull for the owner who is away on a extended vacation. The dog got out of the house when someone opened the door.
"There was too much damage. They put it to sleep ... It's an unfortunate accident," Animal Control Officer Marshall Herrington said. Herrington contacted the pit bull owner who was on her way to South Dakota. He said she was well aware of the situation.
The dog is to remain quarantined for 10 days at the owner's home.
