Wisconsin: Roscoe officer shoots and kills pit bull to protect residents

WISCONSIN -- A Roscoe police officer shot and killed a pit bull that broke free from its owner and was reportedly charging toward residents and the officer.

The officer was called to the area of Talentina and Lemon Crass at 10 p.m. Wednesday to investigate a report of a dog attacking a woman, according to a news release from the Roscoe Police Department.

The police officer saw a woman struggling with a pit bull in the backyard of a residence. It was learned the woman was the owner of the dog and she was attempting to hold the dog and prevent it from going after a smaller dog nearby.

The pit bull was able to break free and began charging towards nearby residents, the news release stated. The dog then charged at the officer and the dog owner, at which time the officer shot and killed the dog.

Winnebago County Animal Control personnel arrived on the scene and collected the dog’s body.

Roscoe Police Chief Jamie Evans said there will be an administrative review of the incident to determine if there were any policy violations or other issues. If any violations are found, an internal investigation may be ordered, she said.
