Texas: Terry Alexander and her husband Ray Alexander arrested on animal cruelty charges after four starving horses seized

TEXAS -- An Elm Mott couple was arrested at their home Wednesday afternoon on animal cruelty charges a week after deputies seized four horses from their property that appeared to be starved, McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara said.

Terry Alexander, 39, and her husband, Ray Alexander, whose age was not available Wednesday, were taken to the McLennan County Jail at about 3 p.m. from their home at 5363 Old Dallas Road, McNamara said.

Ray Alexander cooperated during the seizure of the animals but Terry did not, McNamara added. When deputies took the horses, she told them she believed the animals were fine.

McNamara said a passerby told deputies they at some point tried to sneak hay to the horses but that Terry angrily threw the food back outside of the paddock, claiming the animals were on a "special diet".

McNamara said all four horses were under the age of 5 years old and are now in a facility in Waco and being nursed back to health.

He said deputies are trying to find a good home for the animals instead of auctioning them.

“It was obvious to us the horses were terribly malnourished and appeared to be starved,” McNamara said.

“We’re not going to tolerate people treating animals like that.”

The Alexanders’ bond amounts were not available late Wednesday afternoon.
