Young girls honored for bravery in fighting off pit bull attack

LOUISIANA -- ‎When 8-year-old Mikayja Oliver was being attacked by two pit bulls while riding her bike with her friend, 11-year-old Desiree Mitchell in April, Desiree sprang into action.

Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards honored the two young women for their courage and bravery during and after the attack.

Edwards said Desiree physically fought the dogs to get them off Mikayja and then ran for help, saving her friend from more harm.

“Most adults put in a situation like that may not have handled themselves as composed and brave as Desiree did. Most of us would have panicked or even ran away.” states Edwards.

As Sheriff Edwards presented their plaques, he shared with Desiree that her extraordinary act of bravery has defined her as a true hero and has shown a pure demonstration of the strength of her character. Mikayja was presented with a plaque of courage, because of her will to fight. Edwards said her positive attitude during this entire experience is what has aided in her journey to recovery.
