Witnesses said the dog was trying to attack people that were walking in the area.
Before noon Tuesday, neighbors in the area began calling Abilene Animal Control to report the dog's dangerous behavior.

"As soon as we were stepping into our yard, the dog charged us," said Steve Lewis.
"I came back outside to see what he was barking at and he came around the corner, growling and snarling and barking at me," said Jessica Massey.
When an officer arrived the dog charged him. Fearing for his safety, the officer shot and hit the dog a total of three times, eventually killing it. No one was bitten.
Jessica Massey lives lives next door and said she understands why the pit bull had to be killed.
"He had no choice," said Massey.
A little further down the block, Lewis said he heard gun shots.
"It's unfortunate but in this situation it had to be done. Someone was going to get hurt, seriously," said Lewis.
Lewis owns two pit bulls and hopes this incident doesn't shed a bad light on the breed.
"The only way they do that is if they're mistreated. It's how you raise the dog," said Lewis.

"If you don't have time for your dog, don't have a dog. If you don't have the patience, you don't need to have them. Its not the breeds fault,' said Massey.
Abilene police were having trouble getting in touch with the dog's owner.
Animal control is trying to verify if the dog had current vaccinations before they decide to run a rabies test.
