Police find 140 pets in Gadsden home

ALABAMA -- An animal hoarding situation is under investigation in Gadsden, where police say a tip led them to two animal hoarders.

Inside the home, police discovered more than 140 exotic birds, dogs and cats in the home. Some of the animals were in poor condition. Animal control officials say they don't expect many of them to live.

Gadsden police say this is their first case like this. Police say their priority will be getting help to the two men living at the home.

"Other than the hoarding problem, there's the problems inside the home, so we need to get these guys helped out. Whatever we can do to get them out of this situation," Captain Regina May said.

Gadsden Police will allow the men to keep two of the dogs. They will also do surprise inspections so they can make sure the animals are being taken care of and seeing a vet regularly.
